The Neumann U87 is arguably the best known and most widely used studio microphone. It is a very versatile microphone, but its most popular use is for speech and vocals.

It is equipped with a large dual-diaphragm capsule with three directional patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8. These are selectable with a switch below the headgrille. A 10dB attenuation switch is located on the rear. It enables the microphone to handle sound pressure levels up to 127 dB without distortion. The AKG C414 XL II large diaphragm multi-pattern condenser microphones is the latest iteration of the famous C414 line of microphones. The C414 XLII version differs from the C414 XLS version in one major respect – the capsule. The C414 XLII's slight presence boost and impressive spatial reproduction are both similar to the legendary AKG C12 microphone from 1953. This characteristic response and spatial detailing makes lead vocals and solo instruments stand out, even in a dense mix. I personally use this microphone whenever I'm after a condenser-like sound (in terms of its extended frequency range and high output level), but with the unparalleled side rejection of a ribbon. My favourite usage is recording vocals of singer-pianists - it sounds great on many singers due to it being brighter than most ribbons and, with careful placement, it can reject the sound of the piano incredibly well. One of the most outstanding things about the Shure SM58 is that you can stick one in front of any kind of vocalist (and most instruments, for that matter) and get excellent results. The secret to the SM58's sound is its critically tuned frequency response, which cuts out low-end rumble and adds a noticeable rise in the upper-mid frequencies.
