I recently rejuvenated an old Packard Bell Easynote laptop (a windows machine) using CloudReady's ChromeOS-like operating system. The laptop now runs like a Chromebook, with supported updates from CloudReady. Updates are free. 

It works best with a Google account, but always works well.
