One of the first Telecasters to come out of Fender's original Ensenada, Mexico factory. A great looking guitar, and a great one to play. Everything about this guitar is standard and unmodified from its 1992 build. It was the eye-catching original Metallic Blue finish that got me first. And when it comes to turf wars over whether US or Mexican Fenders are better, this one comes up trumps. Great build quality and playability - plays and sounds like a classic Telecaster.

Owned since new, a beautifully hand-built guitar from Yamaha's Custom Shop in Japan. Has a super-thin satin-finished neck, it's a delight to play. But it's the crystal-clear sound of this guitar that really makes it stand out. It's hard to find a guitar that plays and sounds this good for anything under £1000 - but this one does, and it can rival the depth and clarity of anything above that price-mark. It's also the exactly the same model that Gaz Coombes (Supergrass & solo) turns to as his main acoustic. I have no claims to Gaz Coombes' heady heights, but this has been my favourite acoustic ever since I bought it.

Headstock, hardware, fretboard, neck & body in very good condition for age, with the exception of a set of "wear & tear" nicks & dents on the body top. None of which affects how this guitar plays & sounds. A lot of work has gone into making this guitar look very special, and a lot of work into making it sound very special. Work which has definitely paid off. Do a blind sound test against a higher priced brand - chances are, you'll pick the LA-8.

Made during the transition period from Burns to Brian May Guitars, the utterly unique Red Special that has powered Brian May through the Queen years and beyond. 

The story behind Brian May's hand-built Red Special is legendary - and if you don't know it, type "Red Special" into your search engine and you're bound to come straight to Brian May Guitars and Wikipedia, where you can read all about it. As far as official replicas go, Burns produced the guitar from 2001, winning Guitarist Magazine's "Best Electric Guitar Of The Year" award for this model in the same year. 

The exponential range of tones you can get from this guitar's original Burns Tri-Sonic pickups, 3 pick-up on/off switches and 3 pick-up in/out phase switches is staggering, And, with its wide fretboard, 24 frets, and incredibly low action, it's a lead guitarist's guitar, with a sonic palette that no other guitar is going to give you. A guitar that Kurt Cobain not only made famous, but also designed in the first place, shortly before his untimely death - the Fender Jaguar/Mustang hybrid that became an icon across the world. 

Proposed by Kurt Cobain, using cut-up polaroid pictures of a Fender Jaguar and a Fender Mustang, annotated, prototyped, adapted, and then sent out on the road with Kurt, in Sonic Blue finish, in the year of his death. 

Fantastic range of sounds from the Fender humbucker & single-coil pick-ups. With a thin neck lending this this more of a rhythm-player's feel and ease of playing, it's the perfect guitar to recreate that unique Nirvana sound. In pretty much mint condition, professionally set up and ready to go.

Produced by Fender only in 2011 & 2013 - 14, the Graham Coxon signature Telecaster. Based on his own modified 68 Telecaster, with a humbucking PAF in the neck position. Which, with the vintage single-coil by the bridge, gives this guitar lots of versatility of tone, and plenty of opportunities to recreate that Graham Coxon sound. 

In near factory-finish condition & professionally set up, a great guitar. Favourite thing for me - the rosewood fretboard. Just a personal choice, but I've always preferred the dig-in you can get with rosewood than a varnished maple fretboard. But you can be the best judge of that!

Noel Gallagher's original is now a museum piece, so it's models like these that keep the glory days alive. Anyone who was there then or has seen Oasis in their "What's The Story?" heyday will know and love this guitar. Modified and refinished from an original Epiphone USA 1964 Reissue John Lee Hooker Sheraton I, Noel's guitar stood loud & proud for Britpop.

This is a beautifully built and contoured guitar. And it still holds its tone and attack after more than 40 years on the planet. A favourite of Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, on their first album, before the schmaltz took over. Check out "Musclebound" on TOTP in 1981. 

It's definitely been gigged . . . I know that because it was my main guitar for more than 20 years. For the curious and eclectic, this is the guitar behind slightly less well-known 80s Indie/Pop band President Reagan Is Clever. It's a perfect example of advertising truth: the "extra-fast, very thin solid mahogany neck" makes for the lowest action guitar I've ever played in my life. A real gem! 

This one has its fair share of fading & distinctive dents - relic'd through use rather than craftsmanship. To play, it remains a fantastic low-action, high-speed guitar, all parts original, all parts working perfectly.

A piece of history, a beauty to behold and play. 

The President Bass was built from 1963 to 1967. Hofner was as well-known for its basses as for its 6-strings, with bass versions of the Committee, Senator, Verythin and, of course, that now very famous Violin Bass all on offer at the same time as the President. 

This particular guitar was bought in auction. It had seen some action and then some neglect. The nut had broken off below the G-string, replaced by a nail; the D-tuner had been bent sideways into the headstock; and the pick-ups were producing as much output as a crackly crystal radio set (older generation reference).  So, this became a bit of a project. 

Cleaned up, rather than refinished, to keep that lovely depth and patina; reset the tuner, to retain the original; replaced the nut with an aged Hofner 3-ply nut; and hand-rewound the pick-ups. Added to that, a new custom-case . . . there's no off-the-shelf case that can take the length and depth of this beauty.  All in all probably more cost than its remaining market value. But what a piece of history. 

And what a pleasure to play - the "slenda-nek", the easily accessed 24 frets, and the huge warm tone of those Novasonic humbuckers. Close your eyes, and turn back the years.

The Epiphone Sheraton, long-time favourite of John Lee Hooker, Matthew Followill, Tom Delonge, and, most famously, Noel Gallagher. This particular model made famous by The Edge playing it on the video for All Because Of You, the 2005 release from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. A different question as to whether he played it on the studio recording, but when he crashes into the final bars, it's as-close-to-a-lead-solo-as-you'll-get-from-The-Edge. 

This one from the final years of production at the Matsumoku factory in Japan, where Gibson had relocated all production of Epiphones in 1970. What's most staggering about this guitar is the intricacy of the design: the old thick-style script Epiphone signature logo mother-of-pearl & Epiphone "Tree Of Life" inlay, both in mother-of-pearl, the intersected Block & Triangle mother-of-pearl and abalone fretboard inlays, the 5-layer fretboard binding, the 6-layer top body binding, even the 5-layer tortoiseshell pickguard. It's a beautiful piece of work, for what was at the time a relatively budget guitar.

Not just eye-catching for its colour, this is also the ultimate stripped-down, high-performance Flying V.  A single Gibson humbucker pick-up at the bridge, a single Volume knob, a Steinberger KB-X Tremolo, an extended scale length (25.5"). And, holy grail of holy grails, 24 frets, with unrestricted access all the way up to the 24th fret. 

The V '90s came in Nuclear Yellow or High-Gloss Black. The colour is rightly named Nuclear Yellow . . . this one would light up a stadium in the dark.  The Steinberger KB-X Tremolo works exactly and accurately, come dive or climb, with no change in intonation on return to open tuning.  Thoughtfully for the over-active guitarist, you can always play it sitting down, thanks to the flip-out Steinberger Balance Rest on the underside.  

In good condition for its age, with some light nicks and lacquer cracking. Professionally set up and tested and great to rock out with.

A truly iconic guitar, straight from The Smiths era. Whether it was the prominence Johnny Marr brought to it, a revitalised affection for all things 60s after a decade of denial, or a new generation brought up on the jagged electricity coming out of Paul Weller's Rickenbacker in The Jam, you'd be hard-pressed in the 80s to find a lyrically-poetic, guitar-based band without a Rickenbacker 330 somewhere in the mix. 

A classic narrow neck with 24 frets, that lovely Rickenbacker bridge assembly, the Rickenbacker Hi-gain pick-ups, the distinctive "R" tailpiece, and that Tone Mixer knob all combine to give this guitar a lot more versatility than the "jangly" sound it's know for. I was a late convert to Rickenbackers, but when I finally sat down with one, was amazed by the range of tones you could get out of this guitar. 

It's over 30 years old, so it has some of the edge chips to the paintwork that you'd expect. But that makes no difference at all to the sound and playability. With a professionally set-up, this takes you right back to those great 80s guitar bands. Or right up to date with bands like Blossoms leading the charge.

Les Paul. Goldtop. Mahogany. Ceramic humbuckers. All the hallmarks and tone of one of Gibson's most iconic guitars. 

The Gibson Les Paul Classic, launched in 1990, was a reissue based on the 1960 Les Paul - recreating the slim neck profile, narrow headstock, thin cutaway binding, aged yellowish fingerboard inlays, inked-on serial number, nickel hardware, vintage-style logo and aged binding on the body & neck.

This one, from 1996, is a massive-sounding guitar that's almost impossible to put down once you plug it in. Loaded with some absolutely massive Seymour Duncan SH-55 pickups, this guitar has a huge range of tones from warm and bluesy to searing rock.  Every time I pick it up and play, I play better (I'm sure that's true!). 

A few distinguishing marks that come with its age, but professionally set up and in perfect playing condition.

A very special piece of indie rock history up for hire: The Vaccines' lead singer/guitarist Justin Hayward-Young's Danelectro Dead On 67. Complete with original strap, gaffer-taped in case of high-energy performance. This was the beloved companion for the bright, punchy guitar sound that has characterised The Vaccines since they first hit our ears late in 2010 with "If You Wanna" (a defiant earworm, if ever there was one).

This guitar has retro written all over it: 

- The "Totally Shielded" truss-rod cover, not just a logo, but a truth - not a touch of buzz or hum from the electrics. 

- The audio-style volume and tone knobs, in line with the original 67 models, and bringing a home-made to production feel to the set-up. 

- The characteristic lipstick single-coil pick-ups - as the story goes, back in the early days, Danelectro sourced a job-lot of lipstick tubes to house their pick-ups, and have stuck with that unique look ever since. 

- The homegrown bridge and vibrato system - the essence of simplicity, no elegance, but perfect for narrow pitch variation. 

- The back to the 60s look of the "mother-of-shower-curtain" pickguard. 

- And, of course, that wonderfully sculpted retro body profile. 

A timeless retro classic that's made its mark on stage, studio and video. Classic.

Loads to love about this guitar. The tall, narrow, high-output pickups, surrounded by notched metal rings ( or “claws”) to reduce hum, custom-built Bare Knuckles in this case. The variety of tones that come with the four-way toggle switch and brightness switches. The humbucker effect of the serial setting for the pick-ups in the toggle fourth position. The design improvements that increase the robustness of the bridge and tremolo units. All that and a huge range of sonic possibilities. A guitar that is identical to the one he plays today (with the exception of the Johnny Marr signature decal - but if you are Johnny Marr, you probably don't need that namecheck).

A very special guitar for hire: Katrina & The Waves' guitarist/songwriter Kimberley Rew's 1989 Gibson SG '62 Reissue. Not only that, but the guitar he used on the recording of Katrina & The Waves' winning anthem, "Love Shine A Light" - the last time the UK won Eurovision. 

Bought new by Kimberley in 1992, this model is from the first few production years of Gibson's now well-trodden classic reproduction lines. The one-piece mahogany neck and body, the early 60's super-slim, super-fast neck, the reduced footprint of the scratchplate, and the choice of subtler nickel hardware over chrome. 

Whether it's because you like Eurovision, Katrina & The Waves, or an absolutely classic Gibson SG, this guitar delivers. A superb recreation of those early glory years, totally living up to the super-fast playability that has bewitched rock gods ever since.

A perfect recreation of the Montgomery Ward Airline J. B. Hutto Res-O-Glass that Jack White made so famous with The White Stripes. 

Built with loving care by Eastwood Guitars, this is a first run production model from 2005, shortly after they acquired the rights to the Airline model. An absolute beauty in perfect condition. 

Designed with a tone-chambered (partially hollowed) body, in mahogany, giving you the option for greater tonal sustain and feedback as you crank it up.  There's plenty of warmth, as always, with the humbuckers, but also plenty of punchy brightness at the bridge position. The Alnico-10s were designed to create a more vintage sound (hence their name today, Vintage Voiced Double Coil (VVDC)). So, there's loads of tonal range to be had out of this guitar.  With its narrow C-profile neck and low set-up, this is a faster guitar to play than you'd expect. And, of course, if recreating that slide sound is your thing, the relatively flat 15" radius gives you lots of scope for across the board slide playing.  Ultra-retro, build for the 21st century, a lovely versatile guitar.

The Fender Precision has made it into the hands of pretty much any famous bass guitarist at some point in their career (or all of it). This 1972 model is a perfect example. It bears some of the wear you'd expect from a well-played guitar, but it sounds massive, across the tonal range. Fully maintained and set up, and ready for you to hire.

The "king of the flat-tops". Played by anyone from Elvis Presley through to Alex Turner, and pretty much anyone in between. A beautiful 1993 Gibson J-200 in classic dark sunburst. 

Built in Gibson's famous Bozeman Montana plant, for sale in Gibson's 100th Anniversary celebration year. This one has everything you'd want from a J-200. That beautiful sunburst, the hand-inlaid mother-of-pearl crowns, the gold hardware, the characteristic moustache bridge and inlaid pickguard. 

It's aged well beyond the 25+ years it's been around, and sounds all the better for it. The tone and projection of this guitar is just amazing. Whether that's the quality of the original design and build, the effect of the ageing, or a mix of the two, this guitar just sings. New, these will set you back £4000+, so definitely worth a test run first!

My first 12-string acoustic, bought in the 90s, and with it ever since. If you've always thought you've wanted to try out a 12-string, then this is the one for you. 

Lovely build quality, uses quality rosewood, spruce and mahogany woods to give you all the sparkle and resonance you'd expect from a higher-end guitar. Big-bodied for a full sound, nice low action, stays in tune (which is often a challenge for a 12-string). 

In very good condition, with only a few small dents and very light playwear. Lovely player!

If ever you've wanted to play a resonator guitar, this is the one for you. An original 1934 National Style O Resonator. 85 years old and in excellent condition. 

This one's an absolute beauty - scarcely believable that it's been around for more than 85 years. Classic nickel on brass build, ebony neck, single-cone resonator - and that sound. Hawaiian, bluegrass, blues, fingerpicking, straight chords, regular or open tunings - it's utterly unique, and utterly magic. 

And it's perfect for an Open G tuning, a capo on the third fret, and your own take on Dire Straits' Romeo & Juliet. Sounds great. Big, resonant, with that touch of metallic tone that sets the resonator apart from any other acoustic. If you've never played a resonator before, this is a great place to start!

1975 Vox AC-30 Top Boost - an absolutely beautiful hand-wired valve classic, the choice of so many great guitarists over the years. And for that extra bit of history, this one was owned from new by Alan Williams of 70s glam rock band The Rubettes. 

The Top Boost comes with Vibrato/Tremolo, Normal and Bright channels, delivers 30W of pure valve power through 2 original Celestion Alnico 12" speakers. And, while made in 1975, was built under the ownership of Dallas Arbiter, who religiously recaptured the hand-wired specs of the mid-60s AC-30 classics. 

All original, with the exception of valve replacements, as you'd expect for an amp that's approaching 45 years old.

2005 Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410. Beautiful valve amp, with classic 4 x 10" speaker configuration. 

First introduced in 1996, the Hot Rod Deville 410 draws inspiration and configuration from classic Fender heritage - the Super Reverb '59 Bassman, and the Blues Deville.  

Beautiful clean tones all the way through to heavily overdriven blues and rock ("More Drive" really does mean More Drive), and easy channel change through the 2-button 3-function footswitch. With the benefit of more modern technologies than its original ancestors, this one comes with an Effects Loop so you can accentuate the effect of your chosen pedals post Pre-Amp overdrive (try it - it makes a real difference!).  

Never one to be outdone, this amp goes beyond the demands of even Nigel Tufnell of Spinal Tap . . . all controls go to 12. That with the trademark Fender Reverb unit nestling at the bottom of the cab, and you've got an absolute classic at your disposal. 

Comes with Fender Channel/Drive Footswitch and Vinyl cover. In excellent condition, with barely a nick or scratch on it.

2010 Peavey MAX 115 Bass Amp. Hugely versatile 60W bass amp, with 3-way EQ voicing option. 

The only bass combo I planned to buy - so I spent some time getting the one I liked the most! The version before the current range of MAX amps - and a great variety of sounds. Peavey have loaded this with some lovely EQ presets, and their own TransTube technology to recreate the warmth of a valve amp. So, anything from modern high-clip bass to booming sixties throb. A great amp in a small (if still reassuringly weighty!) package. 

Comes with a custom-voiced 15" speaker (an option you don't get with the current run of MAX combos until you go for the 250W version). I know technology's come a long way, but there's still something that just feels right about a 15" speaker (or more) in a bass cab.  

Great bass response on this one. Lots of clarity at the lowest end, and, with the Modern EQ setting, plenty of punch to add across the range. 

All with a nice simple control panel - and the Effects Loop Send/Return for the post-EQ sonic enhancement of your choice.  

In near perfect condition with barely a dent or scratch.

2000 Marshall G-30 RCD. Marshall tones in a 30W combo, perfect for home practice & small gigs. 

One of the early MG-series, introduced by Marshall in the late-90s, and still going strong today. Great, portable amp, with all the Marshall tones you'd hope for in a solid-state amp - from clean through to searing overdrive. 

One of the big selling points when this first came out in 2000 was the CD Input. Streaming was already upsetting the applecart. And this was just one year before the launch of iTunes . . . The peak before the fall for CDs. Fortunately, the input isn't bothered about your chosen technology, so any source will work with a 3/4" jack input! 

In very good condition, with some scratches to the back bottom panel, but otherwise almost entirely clean.

Mid-90s Fender Champion 110. Fantastic clean & overdrive tones - sounds a lot bigger than 25W.

Size isn't everything. I've used this amp for many years of home practice and gigging. Perfectly portable, all the Fender tones and reverb we know and love, and an overdrive that's as good as many higher end pedals on the market. 

Comes with headphones socket, so you can practice without waking up everyone else, and an external speaker output - which has the opposite effect!

1999 Marshall G10 MKII. Mini-Marshall, 6" speaker, 10W - a lot more power than you'd expect. A Marshall Mini-Me. 

It's a practice amp. It's only 10 watts. It weighs just under 5kg. But it can still wake the neighbours when cranked in Boost mode. Comes with a headphone socket, if you're keen to maintain neighbourly relationships. 

No claims that it will give you a wall of sound, but benefits from all that Marshall technology development over the years. Nice clean solid-state channel, cutting overdrive which, when cranked will give you a lot of fun without needing to add a rack of pedals.

More often seen in purple, this is one of a Limited Edition run of 300 Riots in metallic green, with lovely cream vintage control knobs. 

All the quality and versatility you'd expect from the Suhr brand. Lovely range from overdrive to full-on distortion, and some very nice modulation from dynamic to high gain vintage with the 3-way voice toggle.  

Loved by: The ones that need that little bit more, not just overdrive, but a heavy sprinkling of distortion on top, pretty please.

An instant gateway to the tone of a precisely cocked wah pedal. By adjusting the sweep knob, you can activate your chosen sweet-spot tone, without in-flight wah pedal adjustment. Probably most recognisable when set to replicate the harmonic overdrive of Mark Knopfler's Money For Nothing riff.

It's a micro-pedal, but it can really kick down doors. 

Built to replicate the sound of a far more expensive (and larger) overdrive, its size may fool you at first. But when you plug it in, this delivers in spades. Terrific cooking valve overdrive.

The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff is the stuff of legends, so much so that it's had more replicas and tributes than guitarists that have used it (well, probably). 

This is one of the very finest of those replicas, based on the 1973 - 77 Big Muff, also known as the Ram's Head. Staggering sustain. The perfect pedal for pretty much any solo by David Gilmour since the 1970s.  

Loved by: Big Muff fans everywhere, and anyone that wants their guitar to sing, and keep singing.

Perfect retro remake. Based on the 1960's SAM ASH FUZZZ BOXX and ASTROTONE FUZZ made in New York City in 1966-68 by the Astro Amp company, it's even built from a stock of transistors from 1966. 

The Analog Man gang worked really hard to create a rounded sound, as true to the low-end as the high-end. And they've nailed it. Classic 60s fuzz and distortion.

Paul Crowther first produced the Hot Cake when he was with Split Enz in the 1970s. He knew what he wanted, couldn't find it, so made it himself. 

And only a couple of new releases since then, he's stayed true to the basic formula - a great fat overdrive that retains the underlying tonality of the guitar without resorting to fuzz. So good, I've got two!

It's just a graphic equalizer, it's just a row of frequency sliders. Which is what I thought when I first plugged this in. But start to experiment with it and you're hooked. From thin & reedy (think Nutbush City Limits) to full-fat cream, can make any guitar sound like any guitar. As a floor-pedal graphic equalizer, it takes a lot of beating.

Tame by modern standards, but back in the early-70s, this was a pioneer. A Volume and Wah pedal in one. OK, quite an innovation. And then, why not, white noise filters that enable you to recreate the sound of a raging tornado or the surf on a beach. Oh, and just because there's still some space, a push button police siren, that can be activated in parallel with the instrument signal. Mad, maybe. But listen to 70s glam band The Sweet's classic Blockbuster and you'll know exactly why you need to try this one!

Classic no-frills chorus pedal. The first scale production compact chorus pedal, first introduced in 1979, and running strong through to 1991. You'd be hard-pressed to find any guitarist playing in the 80s, whatever their style, without one of these on their board.

A classic overdrive pedal, without the fuzz of many modern overdrives. This one very uniquely the first ever: Serial #0001. As Lovetone put it, "an instant flash-back to that dynamic, singing, BIG late 60's / early 70's brown sound that is associated with countless classic records spanning the whole musical spectrum . . . will make any new guitar sound 30 years older!" It can be pretty subtle too. Best experienced through an amp that's already cooking!

The legendary Big Cheese, a fantastic recreation of that valve-channelled fuzz of the 60s & 70s, and some. In Lovetone's own words, "a loving homage to the nasty, buzzy yet gorgeous and harmonically rich early fuzz". 

Plenty of permutations here with the variety of tones and drive. And plenty of fun to be had: set to Cheese, turn up the Curds, and you're straight into that world of gated fuzz cut-out that runs from late 60s Stones to mid-90s Radiohead.

A rare and hugely versatile pedal. The third off the production line - Serial # 0003. Lovetone describe the Meatball as "an amazing envelope follower/triggered filter". 

The effects produced are similar to those of wah and flanger/phaser pedals. But that understates it, massively. This is a pedal with infinite sonic possibilities - not to mention additional FX looping. For multiple instruments, not just guitars. Has to be heard (and experimented with) to be believed!

A brilliantly designed overdrive that takes an amp at reasonable settings, and makes it sound like it would sound if it were naturally driven to pure, smooth, tube distortion. 

It's actually two overdrive pedals in one box, each with separate controls, and internal DIP switches to vary the level of Clean, Overdrive & Distortion output. Basically the freedom to set and dial in a range of overdrive levels that you'd need 2 or 3 pedals to achieve. Modern-day classic!

This one is the PRO-REP-102. It's a humbucker, with an easily accessible volume wheel to give you control over your output. 

It's also an active pick-up, with a pre-amp built in. Which means you can plug a long 25m cable into the jack, walk about a bit while playing, and not lose any of that crystal clear sound reproduction.

The Holy Grail! A 1983 Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer. Not the reissue. This one's the original.

Ibanez produced their fabled "9" series for a relatively short run, from 1982 to 1985. This is one of those, and comes loaded with the original (and venerated) JRC4558D chip. Famous for its "mid-hump" boost" to midrange frequencies. And today, one of the most successful, replicated and "modded" pedals in history, A solid gold (or green) classic overdrive.

In production since 1986, as a follow-up to the Boss DD-2, the go-to digital delay pedal for thousands of guitarists. So many choices on the market nowadays, but this is the first and the original. 

Delay settings from 12.5ms to 800ms, from single to infinite repeat, and a Hold function to capture a looped echo to play over. Classic digital delay.

Not only a fabled Pre-CBS Fender, but the first Fender that a young Jimmy James, soon to become Jimi Hendrix, is pictured with.  A shorter scale guitar marketed for the "student", not a bad place to start if you're on the way to rock legend status.

And one that, a decade later, became the favourite of the burgeoning US punk scene - Patti Smith, David Byrne, Television - and then again to later generations, including John Frusciante and Damon Albarn.

​This one may be the "student" model, but all Fenders in that pre-CBS era were built using the same materials and to the same high quality standards as their more famous cousins.  The maple neck with pencilled production date, the rosewood fingerboard and clay position markers, the alder body and 250K pots - the same wood and component choices that you'd find on same-era Stratocasters.

A fantastic piece of Fender history.  And a great player.  For a Fender of its age, not a hint of earthing buzz, great low set-up, and great tones across the three pick-up settings.

An 80s classic.  An all-valve Fender Champ, formerly owned by Tom Robinson Band guitarist Danny Kustow.

Produced from 1986 to 1992, it's not the earliest Fender Champ, the one Fender first introduced in 1948 (with a massive 4 Watt output)  But it is the last of the Champs to stand alone with valves.  So you can expect all that warmth and power in overdrive.

The original speaker's been replaced with a modern Eminence Legend, which increases the tonal responsiveness dramatically.

A perfect practice amp - for one or two players.  But it's also great for small room gigging - on its own, mic'd up, or via a second external speaker connection.

Something special, this one.   Produced in 2000, the first and best Gibson Gary Moore Signature, complete with unbelievable Burstbucker pick-ups.  A signature model Gary often played live himself.

An absolute beauty to look at - that Lemonburst finish just glows.

The distinctive zebra-pattern neck pick-up is not just for looks.  The pick-up is reversed to create an out-of-phase effect when the toggle switch is set to dual-pick-up mode.  This mimics the out-of-phase effect of the Peter Green 59 Les Paul Gary was famous for (and now owned by Kirk Hammett of Metallica).

A beauty of a 335.  A 1977 Walnut model, with rare coil-tap switch.  The exact model Johnny Marr played when The Smiths got together for the first time, to record demos of Handsome Devil, What Difference Does It Make? and Miserable Lie.  Check out Johnny's autobiography, Set The Boy Free, for the picture, and story behind those first sessions.

Super-narrow neck, the narrowest Gibson ever produced for an ES-335.  A joy to play.

Comes loaded with its original Bill Lawrence designed Super Humbucking pickups, which Gibson included in SGs and ES-335s predominantly from the early-70s to mid-80s.  Also known as "Tarbacks" in reference to the black epoxy resin that was used to encase the pick-up, these were Gibson's inaugural "hot" pick-ups.  Probably not so hot by comparison with what's on the market today, but pioneering at the time.  Great warm tone, not too bright, perfect with a cranked amp.

This one has had some playing, with a very distinctive wearing of the lacquer on the back of the neck - cleaned and repolished, but not refinished, in honour of its history in the hands of devoted guitarists. Gibson's J-160E, famous in the hands of both John Lennon and George Harrison - and the ambidextrous Paul McCartney.  The acoustic behind so many of those early Beatles hits - and a fair few famous guitarists since then.  An absolute original, and a beauty to behold and play. 

This one's from 1963, the year after John and George bought their first J-160Es.  The same build and spec.  Totally original, nice slim neck and low set-up, electrics all working perfectly.

It does bear the dents and scratches that you'd expect from a guitar that's over 55 years old, but just sounds superb, whether plugged in or purely acoustic.

An original 1976 Ibanez 2459 Destroyer.  Based very clearly on the early Gibson Korina Explorers of the late 50s/early 60s, an absolute classic.  From The Killers' debut Hot Fuss all the way through to Wonderful Wonderful, the 1976 Ibanez Destroyer was Dave Keuning's go-to guitar - in the studio, on video, and live.

Made all the better by the replacement of the original Super 70s pick-ups with a Gibson Alnico T-Top at the neck and a high-output Dirty Fingers Ceramic PAF at the bridge.  The Dirty Fingers PAFs were introduced into Gibson's own Explorers at the start of the 80s, a direct response to the wave of demand from thrashers and shredders.  Whether that's your style, or you're more into an indie heritage that runs from The Edge to Dave Keuning, this is a beauty.

It's a road-worn guitar.  If you love completely clean vintage guitars, then this one isn't for you.  But if you want something with bite, experience, and the scars to show for it, look no further.  Perfectly set up and a joy to play.

Described by some as the quintessential combo amp, the 65 Twin Reverb is a long-standing reissue of the absolute pinnacle of Fender's flagship amp in the 60s.

The only real modernisation is the use of printed circuit boards replace the original hand-wiring - a lot more reliable as a result.  And this still whacks you with the massive 10-valve, 2 x 12" 85W punch that everyone loves about the  original.  With speakers that duplicate the equally loved Jensen "Specially Designed For Fender" speakers.  Vibrato may not be as vogue as it once was, but if you're going to use it, you don't get any better than this.  All with that fabulous Fender shimmering reverb.  I think they may be right - it really is the quintessential combo amp.

A great iconic bass, famous in the hands of 60s bass legends Jack Bruce, John Entwhistle and Bill Wyman, amongst others.

Has a short 30.5" scale and an incredibly narrow superfast neck. 

Hugely versatile, plays and sounds just fabulous.  All the way from the warm thickness of the neck humbucker, to the edge of the bridge mini-humbucker, to the woodiness of the 4th position.  Plus the added feature of a levered mute, which gives you more of a stand-up bass response.  A huge amount in a small package!  And a great bass, whatever your chosen style.

It's a 1969 guitar, so it's an aged beauty.  It's seen a life on the road, and bears testament with the nicks and chips you'd expect.  But in terms of hardware, fretboard, frets, and electrics, it's in fantastic condition.  A true classic.

Beautiful Cherry Red Epiphone EA-250, one of the earliest guitars to come out of the Matsumoku plant, when Gibson transferred all Epiphone build out of the US to Japan in 1970.

Looks-wise, this guitar's got it all.  That beautiful Cherry Red body, contrasting perfectly with the natural maple neck, the 6-layer body top binding, the 3-layer fretboard binding, squat 60s style headstock, mother-of-pearl inlays, the Bigsby-esque tremolo, with carved wooden harp insert, and those uniquely sized humbuckers (something between a humbucker and a P-90), already retro-style by the early 70s.

These guitars have a bit of a reputation for poor playability.  But I've had the work done to restore that playability.  Now, a lovely sounding thinline guitar.  Those humbuckers have buckets of warmth and response - and sustain just the right side of feedback as you push the volume up.

Has the dents and nicks you'd expect from a guitar that's nearly 50 years old, but plays and sounds great.

A rare piece of space-age technical genius, the Vox V251 Guitar Organ - the first of that rare crossover, built by putting the circuits of a Vox Continental organ into the body of a Vox Phantom guitar.

First and foremost, it is a guitar.  Six strings, a couple of perfectly matched single-coils, a 3-way pick-up switch, and a lovely smooth tremolo for some beautiful shimmer.  Sounds great. 

But it's the organ that makes this unique, and unlocks the fun.  The strings become the "keys", activating the correct pitch when pressed to the fretboard.  The open-string push-buttons allow you to bring in the open notes when needed.  You can change the pitch of the guitar across four octaves, and go from church organ to space-age oboe or flute at the flick of a switch.  And you can add a more percussive delay effect to your chords, just by holding them down.

Not a gigging guitar.  It's an absolute beauty though, so perfect for a very unique photo or video shoot.   And, if you're a studio- or home-based sonic explorer, this is just brilliant.  Of course, it takes a little time to get used to it, but you'd have to expect that given what a ground-breaking piece of technology it is.

Classic 60s semi-acoustic Harmony Rocket H59 III.  Beloved of indie explorers in search of that retro mojo - Dan Auerbach, Wayne Coyne, Billie Joe Armstrong and Billy Corgan to name a few.

Originally Cherry Sunburst, this guitar has aged to a beautiful Honey colour on the top and sides, while retaining a deeper Red on the body back.

Surprising tonal spectrum as you switch between the lovely DeArmond S-Grille neck, middle, and bridge pick-ups.  Even more surprising the Telecaster "twang" you get in the all-pick-up position.

Great Bigsby tremolo - no creaks or detunes.  Works as smoothly as the day it was installed.

Of course, this is an old guitar, so bears some of the marks of a guitar that's lived and been loved.  That adds to its retro credibility.  It's all perfectly set up and a joy to play!

Classic red Fender Mustang, adored by guitarists from Jimi Hendrix to Kurt Cobain to John Frusciante to Matt Healey.  Original 1966 model in perfect working order, all set up and ready to go.

Great looks: the octagonal tuner buttons, the 7.25" rosewood fretboard, in fabulous condition for its age, the uncontoured slab body the beautiful yellowing to the pearl scratchplate, and a body back that shows how much this guitar has been loved and gigged.

Great fun to play.  The shorter scale-length makes a doddle of bends (and overbends), there's a tonne of fun to be had with switching between pick-ups and phasing, and, yes, there's all those associations with the 90s guitar gods that brought this beauty back into the limelight.

It's a vintage guitar, so there's expected wear to the body in particular.  But the neck, frets and fretboard are in great condition, all the electrics work perfectly, and it's all set up and good to go.

A lovely looker.  Famous in the hands of Elvis Presley's guitarist, chicken-picking king James Burton, and anyone from Noel Gallagher to Taylor Swift.  

Lots of vintage mojo: lovely Slim "C" neck, 3-barrel saddle bridge, Top Hat selecter switch, and "F" stamped neckplate.  Upgraded with Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pick-ups and CTS Soft Vintage Taper pots.  Sounds great.

1974 Gibson Ripper LS-9 Bass, as made famous by Krist Novoselic in Nirvana (he liked them so much, he had four of them!).

Really versatile guitar, adapting easily to many styles, with everything from deep warm bass to clicky treble.  Loaded with Gibson's Q-system, basically preset EQ options and mid- and treble roll-off pots instead of standard tone pots, which unlocks a wide range of tones.  Lovely sound.

Maple neck and fretboard, with an alder body.  Plays beautifully with that long-scale 34.5" neck.  It's seen a life on the road, and bears testament with the nicks and chips you'd expect.  But in terms of hardware, fretboard, frets, and electrics, it's in superb condition.

One of the absolute classics.  A 1990 Gibson Les Paul Custom in Alpine White, famous in the hands of anyone from Lyndsey Buckingham, Steve Jones, Randy Rhoads, and Mick Jones, through to James Dean Bradfield, who has played his 1990 Les Paul Custom for more than 30 years with the Manic Street Preachers.

An absolute beauty to behold: gold hardware, multi-layered binding to the headstock and body top/back, ebony fretboard, low frets, and a generous application of mother-of-pearl to the headstock and fretboard.  And plays beautifully,  Lovely natural resonance from all of that wood, beautiful tone in clean mode, roaring sustain in overdrive, incredible speed from the low fretted neck.

Also, at the lower end of weight for a Les Paul, coming in at just under 10 lbs (a sign of high quality wood!).

Classic Fender Jazzmaster 62 Reissue in three-tone sunburst.  Beloved of surf groups, new wave, indie and grunge bands over the years.

This is one of the first run of reissues after Fender stopped making the Jazzmaster in the US in 1980.  A Japanese Jazzmaster, built to the spec of the 1962 Jazzmaster.  An absolute beauty, with loads of lovely features: the pre-CBS headstock, the spaghetti decal, the unbound rosewood fretboard  the clay dot makers, the four-ply tortoiseshell scratchplate, the separate rhythm and lead tone circuits, and white nylon cased single-coils.

It's got everything going for it in terms of tone - all the way from soft muted jazz to biting treble.  With a tremolo that's spot on for your surf or new wave shimmer.  A hugely versatile guitar.

In fantastic condition - save a couple of very distinctive lacquer cracks.  Professionally set-up and good to go.

Lovely Fender parlour guitar in butterscotch finish.  A signature model for Ron Emory, guitarist with Californian punk band TSOL (True Sounds Of Liberty), but obviously having a quieter side to him. One of the holy trinity of Gibson-made solid-body Epiphones - beautiful symmetry from open-book headstock to fully rounded body, one P-90, and lashings of mojo.  No surprises to find one of these among Johnny Marr's favourite guitars.  It really is something.
