It measures the light coming off your monitor to make sure that gray is pure gray, that red is pure red, and that the millions of other colors your display can output match up to the objective light readings. By measuring what it sees and comparing it with the raw numbers, calibration software can create a custom profile for your display that compensates for its quirks and deficiencies.
