id surface. The entire surface of the platform pieces are wood, and painted black. For very safe coverage on the platform pieces I recommend a large rug (eliminates foot noise when doing video or sound production). I am going to build more sections and expand the entire stage size, but this size and price are what I have for now. Have used it twice so far - GREAT experience. By the way, the giant yellow ratchet strap? That's what ties all the pieces very tight together underneath. Easy to put that on as well.
