MORE INFO LG's Minibeam Ultra Short Throw Projector with Smart TV (PF 1000U) is the home entertainment projector I've been waiting for. Whatever else it does well or badly, its key feature is its ultra-short throw, an absolute requirement for making a projector easy to install in a home setting, and arguably easier than a large-screen TV. It also helps make the PF1000U our Editors' Choice premium home entertainment projector. The PF1000U is far from the first ultra-short-throw model, but it is the first one that's both affordable and is tuned for video rather than data images. Likewise, there are lots of competitors tuned for video and home use—including DLP models like the LG LED Smart Projector PF85U and LCD models like the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 3500 , which is our Editors' Choice moderately priced 3D home theater projector—but none of those offer an ultra-short throw. The PF1000U is nearly unique in that regard. Ultra-Short Throw Is the Way to Go I've been pointing out for years that projectors have all sorts of advantages over large-screen TVs. (See, for example, Why My Next TV Will Be a Projector.) Basically, they can give you larger images, with sizes going well over 100 inches (measured diagonally), with equally good quality. And for larger sizes in particular, they can cost dramatically less. They're also a lot lighter and smaller than large-screen TVs, which makes them easier to move into place. Along with that, I've argued that the main impediment that keeps most people from considering a projector instead of a flat-screen TV is the need to run wires from a power source and video sources to the projector. Nobody wants to see the cables, and snaking them through walls, floors, and ceilings is a hassle. An ultra-short throw eliminates that issue by letting you position the projector in essentially the same spot you would put a TV. The PF1000U can throw a big image from only a few inches away. For the 90-inch image (measured diagonally) that I used for testing, the front of the projector was just 12 inches from the screen, and the rear of the projector, where the image bounces off a mirror on the way to the screen, was just 23 inches away. With that short a throw distance, you can put the projector on a cabinet or table in front of a screen mounted on a wall and not need the cables and power cord to go any farther than they would with a TV. Even better, the PF1000U's weight and size—at 4 pounds 14 ounces and 4.5 by 5.2 by 11.1 inches (HWD)—make it easy to handle. They also eliminate any need to tie the projector down with wires, as you should with a big, heavy TV, to prevent it from accidentally falling over. Also a Smart TV Aside from the ultra-short throw, the PF1000U has a lot in common with the LG PF85U. In particular, you can think of either model as a projector with a built-in TV tuner and LG Smart TV, or as a Smart TV that happens to use a projector as a display. What that translates to is that if you connect a coax cable from an antenna or other RF-video source to the PF1000U, you can surf TV channels. You can also connect to a network, using an Ethernet cable or built-in Wi-Fi, to stream video or audio from any network-connected DLNA device. And assuming your network is connected to the Web, you can use the built-in LG Smart feature to stream from VUDU, Netflix, and YouTube, use Google Maps, and download more apps from LG Smartworld using the built-in browser. And, of course, if you connect to a cable box or the equivalent, you can watch anything you can choose on the cable box. Setup and Brightness Setup is standard for an ultra-short-throw projector, with a manual focus and no zoom. Connection options include two HDMI ports and an Ethernet port, which lets you connect to a network that's connected to the Internet to take advantage of the Smart TV feature. Both HDMI ports are 1.4a, which means they can connect directly to a video source for 3D input. One also supports MHL for compatible phones and tablets, and the projector's Wi-Fi connection options include support for both Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) and Miracast. In addition, there are both component- and composite-video inputs, two USB Type A ports, mini-jack and optical audio outputs, and the coax connector for RF input. The component and composite inputs are both mini-jacks that work with supplied adapters to add appropriate connectors. The USB ports lets you read files directly from a USB memory key, as well as connect a mouse and keyboard to control the projector menus or interact with Smart TV features. Most of the ports are on a side panel. However, the coax connector and one HDMI port are on the front, closest to the screen, to keep the cables going to either one hidden from view. Missing from this list is a VGA port, so if you want to connect a PC, you'll need one that offers a digital video connector like HDMI. Using the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommendations and assuming a 1.0 gain screen, the PF1000U's 1,000 lumen rating should make it bright enough at the native 16:9 aspect ratio for a 123 to 167 inch screen (measured diagonally) in theater-dark lighting. In moderate ambient light, the maximum size for extended viewing drops to 82 inches. Keep in mind that the projector's actual brightness varies with its settings, so the brightness will most often be lower in real-world use, but you can also compensate for that somewhat with a high-gain screen. Related StorySee How We Test Projectors Image Quality, Sound, and Light Source Image quality for the PF1000U is just short of excellent. Its color balance was impressively good in our tests, with suitably neutral grays at all levels from black to white in all modes. It also did an excellent job maintaining shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas) and resisting posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually) even in test clips that tend to cause those problems. Color quality ranges from good to excellent. If you like to adjust the image quality to match your preferences, the PF1000U gives you plenty of sophisticated settings to work with. Options include noise reduction, frame interpolation to make motion look smoother, and edge enhancement to make images look sharper. There's also a wizard to help less sophisticated users pick settings to match their tastes. As with almost all DLP projectors, the PF1000U shows rainbow artifacts, but it doesn't show many. I saw them often enough with a black-and-white test clip that anyone who sees them easily may well consider them annoying. With color input, however, I saw them infrequently enough that even someone who sees these artifacts easily isn't likely to be bothered by them. The projector also did well with 3D image quality. I didn't see any crosstalk, and I saw only a hint of 3D-related motion artifacts in test scenes that tend to bring out the problem. The artifacts were so subtle that I might not have noticed them if I weren't looking for them. The two 3 watt speakers have enough volume to fill a small family room and good enough quality to be useful. However, as with any stereo speakers set so close together, there isn't any noticeable stereo effect. The LED light-source not only keeps the running cost down by using less electricity than traditional lamps, it's also designed to last the life of the projector, so you won't have to buy a replacement. Conclusion If you want a projector that's guaranteed not to show rainbow artifacts, consider an LCD model like the Epson 3,500. If you don't watch much in black and white, however, or aren't bothered at all by rainbow artifacts, the LG Minibeam Ultra Short Throw Projector with Smart TV (PF1000U) has a lot to like. The ultra-short throw eliminates the need to run cables across a room, the image quality is more than acceptable, and the built-in TV tuner and Smart TV capability are welcome extras. I'd like it even better if it were a bit brighter, but even as is, it offers more than enough to be our Editors' Choice premium home-entertainment projector for a small family room.
